Refrigeration Battery is a cool idea for saving energy at the supermarket

It's the Refrigeration Battery from Axiom. Apparently those giant coolers and fridges full of all that unhealthy frozen prepared food eat up 56 percent of a grocery store's electricity. The refrigeration battery, like the Powerwall, works by storing energy when power is cheap, smoothing out the demand curve. However it does it with water, not lithium.

Those of us who are conscious about not wasting energy might thing that the energy-efficient lightbulb revolution is over. We switched to CFLs a few years ago, and are getting even better LEDs now. But according to Energy Star, the government agency that tracks that kind of thing, around 70% of light sockets in the U.S. still contain inefficient lightbulbs (meaning mostly: incandescent). (more…)
